A Gentle Stroll through the Paices Wood Nature ReservePaices Wood is found just to the south of Aldermaston, entered through the unlikely-looking Youngs Industrial Estate on the A340. Centred on a string of 7 lakes, the nature reserve has a range of habitats; mature trees, coppiced woodland, regenerating woodland and a small section of heathland, which is gradually establishing itself. We were guided round the reserve by John Lerpiniere. The main interest on this mid-July day, in bright sunshine, were the butterflies and daytime moths. Birdlife was scarce (although a common tern was circling one of the lakes). Lapwing nest on the reserve, and wood larks visit the heathland. Jean disturbed a grass snake, although we didn't encounter any adders. But for a small reserve close to industrial activities, this woodland would repay a visit at any time of year. Note the opening times - unfortunately the reserve is not open on Sundays. Butterflies seen included small heath, common blue, comma, silver-washed fritillary (many and glorious), small skipper, red admiral, disputed white admiral or purple emperor, gatekeeper, meadow brown, ringlet. Click here for a large (3.4 Mbyte) leaflet on Paices Wood, or here for a lower quality copy (700kb) of the same leaflet. Thanks to Ricki for the photos.
